Adam Schefter, of the NFL
Network, reports Indianapolis Colts running back Joseph Addai
(hamstring) is expected to miss two to four weeks with a slightly
torn hamstring, according to a source.
Coming off consecutive
1,000-yard seasons, Addai entered the season as a surefire
first-round draft choice in many fantasy drafts, but so far this
season, he has not performed as a No. 1 running back in fantasy terms
expect for his touchdown total. The Colts offense has been in a slump
because of various injuries, particularly along the offensive line,
and also due to quarterback Peyton Manning's knee rehabilitation
causing a slow start to the season.
In five games this season,
Addai has rushed for 216 yards and four touchdowns on 62 carries. He
is averaging only 3.5 yards per carry. He has not had more than 17
carries in any game this season and has not rushed for more than 78
yards in any contest, as well. He has also caught five passes for 29
yards in his five games.
Prior to this season, Addai
has missed only one game and has put up solid numbers in his two
seasons. Last season, he rushed for 1,072 yards and 12 touchdowns on
261 carries; he also caught 41 passes for 364 yards with three
touchdowns. In his rookie season, he was able to total 1,081 rushing
yards and seven touchdowns with a 4.8 yards-per-carry average.
In terms of fantasy, this
certainly is a setback for Addai owners, but said fantasy owners have
dealt with Addai's struggles throughout the entire season thus far.
Addai is still a capable running back despite his struggles, and
owners will need to look for a replacement on the waiver wire. The
injury is not considered to be a long-term injury, so it is possible
he could be back in two weeks. Owners should stash Addai on their
bench, because he should be valuable in the second half of the
season.
With the Colts putting
running back Mike Hart (knee) on Injured Reserve, the team's primary
running back will likely be Dominic Rhodes. He saw limited time
during the first four games of the season but posted a respectable
effort of the team's Week 6 game. He rushed for 73 yards and one
touchdown on 25 carries in the game. Owners looking for a short-term
replacement should definitely pick up Rhodes, who will see plenty of
playing time while Addai is out.
The Colts could also look in
the free-agent market for some depth. Of the free agents available:
running backs Dewayne Wright (Bills), Vernand Morency (Packers),
Marcel Shipp (Texans), Ron Dayne (Texans), Tatum Bell (Lions) and
Tony Hunt (Eagles), all of whom would be low-cost pickups if they
were signed by Indianapolis.
The Colts signed tailback
Clifton Dawson, who has mild experience in their system, but it is
tough to imagine the team being comfortable with just Rhodes and
Dawson available each week Addai is out. Running back Chad Simpson
was also signed from the practice squad, which only further fuels
their need for external help in the depth department.
